Hungerwood

Afterwards, the ghost of cognition
Flickered out of thought.
Slats of greening light
Steeped the silence.
We had been told not to breathe
The spore-filled air,
But it tasted like winter.
Keeling over, the roots
Sprouted from our mouths.
